MY ARTIST STATEMENT
Art is not just a visual experience; it is a profound journey into the depths of our being. It’s a dialogue between the canvas and the soul, where emotions and stories unfold in vibrant colours and dynamic forms.
MY INSPIRATION
I draw inspiration from the vibrant energy and frequencies of the people around me and from the myriad experiences of my own life. My background as a paramedic and midwife, where I’ve been intimately involved in the raw, emotional essence of human existence, profoundly shapes my artistic vision. This journey, paired with my relocation to Portugal from England, has provided me the space to fully immerse myself in my art. Every piece I create becomes a deep exploration of the human condition, the arcs of emotions like joy, nostalgia, and curiosity, and the climaxes and resolutions that define life’s most profound moments.
MY TECHNIQUES
I am passionate about the creative process, embracing a wide range of materials that resonate with me at the moment- oils, acrylics, charcoal, oil pastels, pencils, spray paint, and more. My approach is intuitive and free-flowing, with no strict rules. Each artwork evolves organically, layers upon layers, where chance, correction, and discovery lead to a unique composition of colour, texture, and form. The vibrant paintings I create use bold colours and dynamic shapes, evoking a sense of excitement and energy. For me, colour is not just a visual element; it’s a language all its own, communicating emotions and stories that words cannot capture.
MY WORK
My art tells stories that transcend the physical form, delving into the deeper layers of our existence. Inspired by the human body and its intricate details, my collections explore the journey of life, death, rebirth, and the emotions that connect us all. Each painting is a narrative, a story about the creative process, the inspiration behind the piece, and the innovative use of mixed media. ABOUT THE ARTIST
Dakota Rivers also known as Lola Lis originally from Poland, is a self-taught artist who rediscovered her passion for expressive art after more than a decade in the medical field. Having left Poland at 21, she spent six years in Manchester and nine in London before relocating to Lisbon, Portugal. Her work as a paramedic and midwife, where she witnessed the full spectrum of life and death, deeply influences her art.
Dakota's love for art and creativity began at a young age, inspired by her uncle, a self-taught artist who carved abstract sculptures from wood. As a young man, her uncle worked as a baker, making bread. However, driven by a passion he could not ignore, he left the job without telling his parents and began creating and selling wood sculptures. With no formal education or degree in art, he honed his craft independently, eventually starting a garden design company while continuing to sculpt. Lola spent hours in his workshop, captivated by the smell of wood and the sight of his hands crafting amazing pieces. His passing from cancer left a profound impact on her, and she feels it is her duty to carry on his artistic legacy. She treasures the chisel she once gave him as a birthday gift, keeping it close to her heart and drawing inspiration from it daily.
Dakota has faced many heartaches in life, but by investing time in her self-growth, she has awakened her mind, body, and soul. She channels these emotions and discoveries through her art, creating works that resonate deeply with those who view them. Now based in Portugal, she dedicates her time to crafting abstract pieces that speak to the soul. Each collection is unique, reflecting the wild, untamed spirit of her creative process.
